Tracing Beauty in Beauty, and Wonder: Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on an island named the city of the caves (Gharapuri), near Mumbai in Maharashtra, form a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, was a daytrip appreciating an extraordinary display of precision: rock cut statues, created in craftsmenship & devotion, hewn in solid basalt rock. Dated back as far as 2nd century BCE - these extraordinary statues depict stories and scenes like Shiva bringing Ganges River to Earth, The Wedding of Shiva, Shiva slaying the demon of darkness, Shiva as the cosmic lord of dancers, portraying the many aspects qualities of Shiva: creation, protection, and destruction.
